Action For Mental Illness( ACMI)

ACMI is an advocacy initiative to impact the rights, quality and availability of support services to mentally ill persons and their families. There are 40-50 million people in India who are the victims of some form of Mental Illness such as Schizophrenia, Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety and Bi-Polar Mood Disorder. A majotity of them are in the community under the care of their family members. Few are lost to history and a few more confined to the streets.

OUR MISSION
ACMI's mission invokes a dedicated involvement to improve the social environment for the mentally ill persons and their family care givers by deploying advocacy measures to influence political and social perceptions, national policy, legislations, legal impact and budgetary allocations. With equal importance, family care givers will be empowered with informational inputs to provide an improved quality of care while building skills to manage the complex task of family care.

OUR VISION
ACMI believes in a future where persons with mental illness and other psychiatric disorders live in a society that recognizes mental health on par with physical health, and extends the same support and understanding. The stigma that is currently attached to the mentally ill should be removed, just as the stigma towards people with TB was eliminated. India can lead the world in creating a new social balance where equitable and fair treatment is available to the marginalized and voiceless Indians suffering from mental illness.
